Bob Simmons’ yearbook comments from his first year at Brandon College list him as class president, an outstanding athlete, and enthusiastic participant in all areas of student life.
Simmons played football for the Brandon College Caps from 1955-60 and was a multi-year member of the men’s basketball team in its formative years.
Some of his biggest accomplishments came in track and field, where he had the high men’s aggregate score, earning the men’s title at the annual Brandon College track and field meet in four of his five years as an athlete.
His first track title came in 1956, the same year he finished second in the cross country race by mere strides. In 1957 he ran the race of his life, capturing the cross country race to go along with aggregate score in track and field in 1957.
Simmons broke a school record at the 1959 Track and Field meet in standing broad jump, capturing his third aggregate title, placing first place in five of six events.
According to the 1959 Brandon College yearbook “The Sickle”, Simmons was a “jump-shot artist” in basketball and was one of the leading scorers.
He again won aggregate track and field honours in 1960 (his grad year) before getting a try-out with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers due to his sheer athleticism and determination.
