Doug Gillies was a big, bruising defenceman recruited to the Bobcats from the 1972-73 season. The native of Moose Jaw patrolled the blueline for Brandon University for two years and an integral member of the 1973-74 team, which was the first Brandon University or Brandon College team to win an intercollegiate conference crown.
That year, under coach Bob Kabel, the Bobcats defeated the University of Manitoba to win the Great Plains Athletic Conference championship. After winning the GPAC title, Brandon played the University of Calgary in the Canada West final, but lost two straight.
During his time at BU, the older brother of New York Islanders’ standout Clark Gillies was named BU’s outstanding male athlete in 1972-73 and second-team GPAC all-star in 1973-74.
