Doug Steeves, or “Coach” as he was affectionately known, made a name for himself as a tireless supporter of amateur sport in Brandon – primarily when it came to “pigskin”. Steeves was considered the father of football in Brandon thanks to his four decades of work in the sport.
Steeves moved to the Wheat City from Quebec in 1967, where he took over Athletic Director duties at Brandon University. In his eight years in the position he filled many roles - head football coach, assistant hockey coach, and curling coach among many other duties.
Steeves built the Bobcat football program into a credible university program, while teaching Phys. Ed. courses. The father of four also created the first high school football program at Neelin in the early 1970’s, before creating a football team at Crocus Plains High School in 1978, and then starting a team at Vincent Massey High School in the early 1990’s.
Through-out his career, “Coach” was a tireless supporter of all amateur sport, in particular the Brandon University Bobcats.
Steeves was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Manitoba Football Hall of Fame in 2013.
