Larry Gillis captured three league titles as a player and coach with the Brandon Bobcat men's hockey team before making tremendous contributions to his community.
Gillis and the Bobcats won the university's first-ever Great Plains Athletic Conference championship in 1973-74 and the team successfully repeated the following year with Gillis serving as an alternate captain. He was also named team's most inspirational player in 1974-75.
He stepped behind the BU bench as an assistant for Andy Murray in 1980-81 as the 'Cats captured the GPAC crown while being ranked #1 in Canada.
Gillis went from BU to Assiniboine Community College to lead the Cougar men's hockey team for three seasons. ACC won the Midwest International College Hockey League and represented Manitoba at nationals in 1983 under his guidance.
He helped establish the Westman High School Hockey League in 1989. He spent eight seasons leading the Crocus Plainsmen and guided the club to back-to-back championships in 1990 and 1991.
Gillis was instrumental in establishing Brandon's first-ever all-female hockey team at the peewee age group in 1998-99. Gillis coached many of the original members of the peewee squad through their minor hockey careers and it concluded with the team earning a provincial U18 silver medal in 2003.
