The 1983-84 Bobcat Men's Basketball Team made it to the pinnacle of Canadian university hoops.
Dwight Kearns served as interim coach with Jerry Hemmings on a one-year sabbatical.
John Carson was named GPAC Player of the Year, a first-team all-Canadian and a conference first-team all-star. Hometown Bobcat Grant Coulter was also a first-team league all-star after BU went 13-and-3 during the regular season.
The Bobcats claimed their fifth consecutive Great Plains Athletic Conference championship by sweeping the Winnipeg Wesmen in the best-of-three final.
Brandon's next stop was Ottawa where Charles Douthit was selected as MVP at the Mid-East Regionals. The blue and gold defeated the host GeeGees 94-78 and then a nail-biter against the St. Francis Xavier X-Men 70-69.
BU advanced to nationals in Halifax. The Bobcats booked their spot in the gold medal game after knocking off the Waterloo Warriors 68-61. They were edged 70-62 by the Victoria Vikes in the final.
Brandon trailed 40-29 at the break and rallied to within six points with time winding down. Earl Roberts recorded 18 points while Jan Bujan added 12 points and grabbed six boards. Carson collected 15 points and 17 rebounds while being named a national tournament all-star.
