Tracy Johnson (nee MacLeod) As a 20 year-old sophomore on the Bobcats women's basketball team, Johnson suffered a horrific injury that would ultimately set the path for the rest of her life.
In just the second game of the 1992-1993 season, Johnson severely broke both the tibia and fibula in her right leg. A series of complications in the healing process led to the leg being amputated, but that did not slow the Abbotsford, B.C. product down.
Just three months after the amputation, Johnson participated in Bobcats training camp in preparation for the following season. In doing so, she earned the respect of team mates, coaches and opponents.
Her courageous attitude and story soon came to be known across the sporting landscape in North America, landing her national and international media attention. Soon after completing her playing career, BU named the female inspiration award in her honour. Not long after that, the CIAU followed suit, naming the national award for inspiration in her honour.
Johnson's turn of events as a Bobcat was just the beginning for her, as the mother of four went on to become a teacher, coach, and inspiration to athletes and individuals across the country for her bravery and dedication.
