Key performer: Earl Thomspon Jr. – Arrived in Brandon to little fanfare last year, and then had a dominant pre-season, averaging a double-double in five straight non-conference wins against tough CIS opponents. The Virgin Islands native continued to play well in the regular season, showing flashes of brilliance at moments, and also struggling to find a rhythm against some tough Canada West at other times. Now with one season in Canada under his belt, Thompson Jr. will shoulder much of the load on both ends of the court for the Bobcats this season.
D.J. Jordan – The product of Wichita Falls, Texas is an incredibly dynamic athlete - incredibly fast, great shooting touch, and able to play above the rim on both ends of the court. Jordan was dominant in his first season for the Bobcats last year, scoring 10 points or more in every game last season except two. Notched a career-high 29 points against Regina on November 29 of last year, who the Bobcats will open this season against on November 6.
Coach Quote:Â "The effort has to be there from our guys every night. There are no off nights in our conference, so we need to be ready to work," says coach Gil Cheung. "We've added some size, and I think we need to work harder on the defensive end, especially on the glass. On the offensive end, it's going to take some time for our new guys to gel. In our five pre-season games we've improved on both ends of the court, but we're still a work in progress. It's going to take some time, but I like the strides that we've taken so far."
Key storyline:Â This year's version of the Bobcats features some new faces, a new look, and a new system. The Bobcats have one of their largest recruiting classes in recent memory, and in doing so they got a lot bigger as well. The most notable and intriguing recruit is 6-foot-11 forward John Paul, a big-bodied and big-presence transfer from Tyler Junior College. The product of St. Lucia played JUCO in Texas before transferring to BU where he is expected to provide a big inside presence for the Bobcats. Fellow college transfer Esmat Atem (6-foot-9) and high school recruit Tyler Anderson (6-foot-7) round out the incoming post players, while Troy Grant, Chris Stanhope, and Keneal James also bring university and college level experience to the Bobcats roster. Calgary product and recent high-school grad Pookie Saunders has shown flashes of great athleticism in the pre-season, as the Bobcats went 2-3 in non-conference competition. The 'Cats will begin the 2015-16 regular season at home against a familiar opponent in the Regina Cougars on Friday, November 6 at the BU Healthy Living Centre.
