Brandon product Mary Thomson concluded her fifth year of eligibility and sixth year with the team this last month in spectacular fashion, although it was an unlikely journey. The Brandon product played six years after missing one due to a devastating knee injury. She battled back to lead the young Bobcats squad this year, and recorded some impressive performances in the process.
Â
Thomson concluded her Bobcat career in style in February which included a career high nine kills on Feb. 3 against MacEwan, a rare feat for a setter. She finished that contest just one of a rare triple-double with 37 assists and 11 digs in a career night.
Â
She also leaves the program as the all-time leader in matches and sets played, but most importantly Thomson carried a young Bobcat team within one win of the Canada West playoffs – a team that was expected to finish third last according to the coaches' pre-season poll.
Â
"Mary was the glue that kept our team together when we needed it most," says women's volleyball interim head coachÂ
Kevin Neufeld. "As the starting setter for the youngest team in the conference is a very difficult task to keep all the pieces together but Mary did just that. She wasn't recognized as a conference all-star this year but she undoubtedly was one of the elite setters in the conference and the country this year especially down the stretch."
Â
This marks the second time that Thomson has been named Bobcat Athlete of the Month after earning the honour back in February of 2015.
