Alyssa Montgomery was a big reason why the Brandon University women’s basketball team had a November to remember.
Montgomery and her Bobcats enter the Christmas break riding a four game winning streak. Their 4-and-2 record is the best start to a season since 1983.
The fourth-year American import is second on the team in scoring with 15.3 points per-game and third on the club in rebounding with 5.5 boards per-contest.
The Bobcats’ reigning Most Valuable Player is also among the Canada West leaders in blocks, sitting sixth in the conference in that category, but her intangibles are what make her standout. Intensity and aggression make her a nightmare to defend and make the Bobcats a different team when she is on the floor.
“Alyssa has been a force inside for us,” said women’s coach Novell Thomas. “When we dominate the paint, offensively and defensively we are a much tougher team. She leads that charge inside for us with her rebounding, shot blocking and interior scoring. However, it's been a collective effort and the month of November saw great performances from numerous players. Without the team, Alyssa would not have had the month that she did.”
Montgomery and the Bobcats will look to continue their winning ways when they start the second-half by welcoming the Winnipeg Wesmen on January 7.
