Sydney Carter-Squire was a force for the Bobcats in October, back-stopping the Bobcats to the program’s first Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) league championship against the previously undefeated Red River College Rebels.
Carter-Squire returned to the Bobcats this season after a year away from the team and played with a renewed sense of competitiveness and determination. Carter-Squire led the Bobcats to a 7-0-3 regular season record, allowing just three goals all month. Some of the amazing saves she made in helping the Bobcats capture the conference crown were even more impressive than her stat lines.
“Sydney’s attitude and skill this month was a game-changer for us,” says coach Rainer Schira. “Syd came back from a year away from university and she has put in a lot of effort to be more skilled, more positive, and more of a team player. In the semi-final she saved a penalty kick when we were up 1-0, which made a huge difference in the outcome of the game. It was a game-changing moment. The shooter even went to her after the game and said, ‘I can't believe you got there so quickly.’"
Carter-Squire’s impressive play was on display in the MCAC Final Four. She was a constant source of information to her teammates on the pitch, directing traffic and shouting encouraging comments in a hard-fought game in the league final. In the end the Bobcats exacted a measure of revenge on the team that beat them in the league final last year in Red River, thanks in large part to Carter-Squire’s play.
