Women's basketball team makes it two in a row

Box Score CALGARY - The Bobcats women's basketball team traded in one streak for another. Just two days after ending the team's dubious 73-game losing streak, the 'Cats picked up their second consecutive win Sunday afternoon 80-72 in double-overtime over the Mount Royal Cougars.

It's the first time the 'Cats have won back to back games since February 2008 when they swept the weekend series against the Winnipeg Wesmen.

The Cougars ran out to a big lead to start the game. They rebounded and passed well, climbing out to a 26-13 lead at the end of the quarter. Brandon put up more of a fight in the second quarter as they began to anticipate the Cougar's plays and came away with a few steals to close the gap. At the half the Cougars led 39-23.

Brandon went on a 7-0 run to start the second half as the Cougars just could not handle their inside penetration. The Bobcats closed the gap to 47-46 by the end of the third quarter. BU scored early in the fourth to take their first lead of the game.  From there the play went back and forth. The Cougars opened up a seven point lead for a brief period but sloppy defense let Brandon right back in tying the game at 63 and heading to overtime.

Neither team could get the offense going in the first overtime period as they each only scored five points and a second period was needed. Brandon distanced themselves opening with 7-2 run to begin the frame. The Cougar's inability to score hurt them in the end and Brandon won the game 80-72.

Cassie Cooke led all scorers with 39 points, breaking the team record (since joining Canada West) of 34 points, which she did twice to start the season this year. Cooke also added nine rebounds, eight steals and five assists.

Stephanie Haynes and Ambrea McDonald-Okoro both had double-doubles, Haynes with 12 points and 13 rebounds while McDonald-Okoro put up 12 points and pulled down 10 boards.

Jordan MacLean had a monster performance for the Cougars, scoring 24 points and notching 27 rebounds, while Danica Rybachuk added 16 points.

The loss drops Mount Royal to a record of 1-7 while Brandon improves to 2-6.

Brandon will have a quick turn-around, as the 'Cats will head back to Calgary to play the U of C Dinos on Thursday and Friday night.
