Wesmen sweep Bobcats

Box Score WINNIPEG - The University of Winnipeg Wesmen picked up a 76-66 victory over the Brandon University Bobcats women's basketball team Saturday night in the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.

Five Wesmen players scored in double-digits led by Megan Noonan's game high 17 points. Noonan drained four-three pointers in the contest. Stephanie Kleysen finished with 13 points. Danielle Baril added 12 while Alyssa Grant and Taylor Thorkelsson each scored 11. Thorkelsson led the team with seven rebounds.

Brandon was led by Cassie Cooke's double-double consisting of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Keegan Robinson added 15, including three-three pointers. Aleah Bridges finished with 11 points and eight assists.

Winnipeg's all-round game was evident in the opening quarter. The Wesmen were on fire scoring 16 points in the opening frame while holding the Bobcats to only six points.

The Wesmen held a double-digit lead for the opening six minutes of the second quarter , leading 25-14. A three pointer by Keegan Robinson cut the Winnipeg lead to 25-17. The hometown Wesmen recovered in a big way scoring nine unanswered points to take a 34-17 lead with 1:12 left to play in the opening half. Winnipeg went into the halftime break leading 34-19.

In the third quarter Winnipeg got into some early foul trouble and Brandon was slowly able to cut into the Wesmen lead trailing 50-39 with 3:00 left in the third quarter. A Bridge's three pointer cut the Wesmen lead to single digits at 50-42. Winnipeg was able to hang on to a 52-45 lead after the third quarter. Brandon outscored the Wesmen 26-18 in the frame.

In the fourth quarter both teams put on an offensive display with Winnipeg outscoring the Bobcats 24-21 to make the final tally 76-66.

Winnipeg (8-8) will be on the road next week beginning Friday night at UBC Okanagan and Saturday night in Kelowna against Thompson Rivers. Brandon (5-11) will take on Trinity Western and Fraser Valley on the West Coast.
