The first game of the 2014-15 regular season did not go exactly as planned for the Cougars with Brandon winning in four sets (25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 22-25, 15-11).Jodie Baker and Tori Dakin added 20.5 and 20 points for Brandon in the win. Mount Royal's leading scorer was Robyn Potolicki with 15 points on the night.
Brandon got out to an early lead scoring nine of the first ten points to build a sizeable lead over the Cougars. Mount Royal slowly clawed their way back into the match, posting small two and three-point runs.
They managed to come all the way back to tie the game at 23. Brandon's serve proved to be too powerful, rallying off two straight points to take the set.
The second set proved to be much closer with neither team charging out to a big lead. After trading points back and forth they found themselves, once again, locked at 23. Mount Royal went up a point and then with Potolicki serving for the set, Vaovai Aiono buried her attack into the net and gave MRU the win.
Tied at one set apiece, it was Mount Royal's turn to take an early set lead going off on a 5-2 run. The lead would not last; Brandon scored 7 consecutive points to put the Cougars in a deep hole they could not climb out of. The Bobcats won the third set 25- 18.
The Cougars answered in the fourth winning 25-22. After almost letting a big lead slip away, Mount Royal bared down and grinded out the set. A kill by Fallon Middlemiss put the final point on the board evening the match. Â
The momentum of the fourth set would not be enough. Brandon led throughout the fifth and final set. A misguided pass hit the floor and that was it, Brandon took the match 3-2.Â
The Cougars will get another shot at Brandon tomorrow evening when the two will play the rubber at 5pm on Kenyon Court.
