Late surge from BU isn't enough; Huskies earn sweep

BRANDON - The Bobcats started flat and couldn't bounce back, losing 72-49 to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night.

The Bobcats closed out the first quarter having scored only nine points to Saskatchewan's 23. They continued to struggle throughout the first half hitting just 15.8 per cent of their shots.

Brandon started the second half on a 7-2 run, but it was too little too late. The 'Cats outscored the Huskies 17-16 in the third quarter, but they were unable to close the gap.

Alyssa Montgomery nabbed a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Mikaela Stanton added 12 points and two steals. Amy Williams added 10 points and five rebounds.

Laura Dally led the Huskies with 18 points and three boards. Dalyce Emmerson added nine points and 10 rebounds.

Though the 'Cats didn't end the weekend on a winning note, head coach Novell Thomas noted that the weekend had been a positive experience.

"Tonight our rebounding was a lot better. It's good to play one of the better teams in the conference as it's a good indicator of where we're at as a team. It's also a humbling experience," says Thomas.

"We just need to continue building trust in our own team this season. It comes from time together and going through some tough games like we did this weekend.  That's how you grow as a team, as painful as it is.  There are a few things missing and now it's just about finding out what's most important now and addressing these issues, and moving on to the next issue."

The loss drops the Bobcats record to 3-9, while the Huskies climb to 7-3.

The Bobcats will take on the UBC Thunderbirds on the road next weekend, while the Huskies will take on the Regina Cougars at home.
