Saturday afternoon struggles for Bobcats

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen completed a two game sweep over the Brandon Bobcats after posting an 80-63 victory Saturday afternoon at the Dr. David. F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg. 

Winnipeg won the series opener in Brandon 86-79 on Thursday night. 

The win improves Winnipeg's record to 8-6 in the tight  Pioneer Division standings. Brandon with the loss falls to 1-15 on the season.

Jelane Pryce led the Wesmen with a double-double consisting of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Denzel Lynch-Blair had his best game of the season scoring  20 points. Ryan Oirbans added 13 points while Jordan Clennon led the team with 12 rebounds and nine assists.

The Bobcats were led by Kenonte Ramsey's 15 points. DJ. Jordan and Earl Thompson Jr. each added 14 points. Thompson Jr. completed the double-double hauling down 16 rebounds.

Both teams came out a bit rusty as the opening basket was not scored until 3:30 into the opening quarter. The teams were soon tied at 8-8 when Winnipeg took control scoring 10 straight points to open up a 18-8 lead. Kenonte Ramsey hit a jumper in the final 30 seconds to cut the Wesmen lead to 18-11 after the opening frame.

Brandon made a statement in the early stages of the second quarter scoring seven of the first nine points to cut the Wesmen lead to 20-18. The determined Wesmen team rebounded outscoring the Bobcats 21-9 in the final seven minutes to go into the halftime break with a 41-27 lead..

Winnipeg was able to carry their momentum into the third quarter, outscoring Brandon 20-16 in the quarter to open up a 61-43 lead after 30 minutes. The Wesmen maintained their double-digit lead for the entire fourth quarter to seal the 80-63 victory.

Winnipeg will be on home court next Friday night at 8:00 p.m. against the Manitoba Bisons in the basketball portion of the 24th Annual Duckworth Challenge. Brandon will travel to Edmonton for a weekend series against the Alberta Golden Bears.
