Wesmen earn sweep of Bobcats

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Brandon University Bobcats 67-58 Saturday afternoon at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg .

Winnipeg with the victory completes a home and home series sweep, and improves their record to 8-6. Brandon with the loss falls to 3-13 in conference play.

Third year guard Megan Noonan led the Wesmen with a game high 18 points, including four-three pointers. Fifth year guard Stephanie Kleysen added 15 points and eight rebounds. Second year guard Brittania Brown added 10 points off the bench.  Skylar Boulanger grabbed a game high 14 rebounds.

Alyssa Montgomery was the top scorer for Brandon with 17 points. Kaela Cranston added 11, with three-three pointers. Guard Aleah Bridges had nine rebounds and eight assists.

Winnipeg had control in the early stages of the opening quarter, reeling off 12 straight points to take a 12-3 lead early on. Back to back three pointers by Brandon pulled them to within three at 12-9. Winnipeg closed out the opening quarter ahead by a score of  18-14. 

In the second quarter Brandon grabbed their first lead since early on in the opening quarter at 19-18. The lead was short lived as Winnipeg went on a 9-0 run to take the lead right back at 27-19. Brandon closed the gap to six with over 2:00 minutes remaining but Winnipeg on back to back baskets by Noonan and Kleysen extended the Wesmen lead to double-digits. Winnipeg went into the halftime break with a 36-26 lead. 

The Wesmen maintained a double-digit lead for the majority of the third quarter. A three pointer by Brandon's Cranston cut the Wesmen lead to single digits at 50-42 after three quarters. Winnipeg outscored Brandon 17-16 in the fourth quarter to make the final tally 67-58.

Winnipeg will be on home court next Friday night (Jan 30th) against the Manitoba Bisons in the basketball portion of the 24thAnnual Duckworth Challenge.  Brandon will travel to Edmonton for a weekend series against the Alberta Golden Bears.
