Bobcats settle for weekend split

BRANDON – The Brandon Bobcats had their four-match winning streak snapped on Saturday night at the hands of the visiting Calgary Dinos.

The BU men's team dropped a straight sets decision in Canada West men's volleyball action and settled for a weekend split against the seventh-ranked Dinos.

The set scores were 25-22, 25-21 and 25-22 at the Healthy Living Centre.

The opening set saw Calgary gain momentum with a 5-1 run as they led 10-8. The Bobcats trailed the Dinos 16-14 at the technical timeout and eventually narrowed Calgary's advantage to 20-19 late in the first. The visitors eventually pulled away and won the opening set.

In the second, the Bobcats saw the Dinos go on a pair of 3-0 runs and Calgary went into the technical timeout leading 16-13. Brandon trimmed the deficit to 19-18 as the two sides approached crunch time. The Dinos won six of last nine points to push Brandon to the brink of being swept.

Calgary continued to control the pace with a 4-1 run in the third to go up 13-9. Brandon had work to do at the technical timeout as they trailed 16-12. Three consecutive Calgary points put the Bobcats on their heels at 20-14. The Bobcats dug deep and saved two match points, but trailed 24-22 and would get no closer.

Roy Ching collected 12 kills, while Seth Friesen added eight kills for the Bobcats, who slipped to 4-and-2 with the loss.

Curtis Stockton scored a match-high 21 kills as the Dinos improved to 2-and-4.

Brandon is on the road this coming weekend as they take on the Saskatchewan Huskies.

Meanwhile, the Dinos return to action on Thursday by welcoming the Mount Royal Cougars as they two sides open a home-and-home series.
