Bobcats sweep Cougars to remain perfect in 2016

BRANDON – The Bobcats continued their impressive play in 2016, recording their eighth straight conference win, earning the weekend sweep over the Mount Royal Cougars 3-1 (25-21, 25-12, 16-25, 25-22) Saturday night in the process.

The Cougars fought back in the third set thanks in large part to solid play by Brandon product Amy Gordon, but the Bobcats quashed the Cougars hopes by ending the match on a 5-1 run to seal the deal.

The Bobcats stuck to the game plan of difficult serving and powerful blocks, but the Cougars had a much stronger serve receive, fighting off numerous difficult serves.

Shanlee McLennan continued her impressive play this semester, putting up double-double including a match-high 15 kills to go with 12 digs. McLennan also recorded one ace, moving her one shy of the Canada West all-time record of 133 held by Alberta's Jaki Ellis.

Jodie Baker had 10 kills to go with eight blocks, while Donata Huebert earned player of the game honours thanks to 16 digs, most of which came in spectacular fashion.

The Cougars were paced by Carolina Alongi's team high 10 kills, while Gordon had a team-high 22 assists.

The win moves Brandon to 11-9 on the season, while Mount Royal records their third loss in a row to sit at 9-11.

Up next for the Bobcats is a weekend road trip to Winnipeg to play the Manitoba Bisons, while Mount Royal will welcome the Winnipeg Wesmen.
