Bobcats begin second-half with solid road victory

CALGARY - In their first game of 2017, the Brandon Bobcats (4-7) managed to take down the Mount Royal Cougars (2-7) by a score of 72-45 on Friday night in Canada West women's basketball action.

10 different players scored for the Bobcats, led by Amy Williams who went 9-13 from the field for 18 points and added 11 rebounds for a double-double. Meanwhile, Becky Nash also registered a double-double for the Cougars, scoring 13 points to go along with 11 rebounds.

The Cougars came out of the gate ice-cold, making just three of their first 12 attempts as the Bobcats jumped ahead to a 16-7 lead in the first seven minutes.

Bobcats' Keisha Cox and Kinsley Ransom each posted a quarter-high six points, which, alongside solid team defence, gave the visitors a 21-7 lead going into the second quarter.

The Bobcats consistently overpowered the Cougars beneath the hoop during the first half. Michelle Tiffany struggled to gain inside position on the offensive end while the Bobcats' offense was able to use size to their advantage, either scoring beneath the hoop or drawing in defenders and finding open shooters.

The Cougars, forced to keep most of their action to the outside, failed to make the most of their open attempts as the team went 0-8 from the three-point line in the half.

Nine different players scored for the visitors in the first half, as the Bobcats would take a comfortable 42-17 lead into the room.

The Cougars would play their strongest offensive quarter in the third, knocking down a few more shots but were still unable to defend the Bobcats who consistently set up their offense with ease.

Amy Williams began to assert her dominance in the quarter, registering her 10th rebound of the game to go alongside 16 points before the fourth for a double-double.

The Bobcats were able to cruise the rest of the way, relying on their bench players to secure the 76-45 win.

Brandon will look to sweep the weekend series on Saturday.
