Bobcats see winning streak snapped

BRANDON – The Bobcat women's volleyball team saw their five-match winning streak come to an end following a four-set loss to the visiting Trinity Western Spartans on Friday night.

The set scores were 25-22, 20-25, 25-15 and 25-19.

In the opening set, both sides chipped away. The Spartans had a quick 4-0 run, but the Bobcats replied with a pair of 3-0 runs. Trinity trailed 16-15 at the technical timeout, before slowly turned the tables. The Spartans had late surges of 5-1 and 4-1 to take the opener.

The first big momentum swing in the second set was credited to the Bobcats. BU's 7-3 run allowed them to hold a 16-13 advantage at the technical timeout. Trinity trimmed to deficit to a single point, but Brandon was not budging any further. A string of four straight points helped BU to even the contest.

An 11-3 run in the third set was the tale of the tape for Trinity Western as the Spartans put themselves in a strong position to pick up the win.

Trinity Western took command of the fourth set with an early 6-1 run. Brandon fought back late with four straight points to tie it 17-17. The Spartans then sealed up the victory with six straight points to put the match out of reach.

Katelyn Devaney delivered a match-high 15 kills as the Spartans improved to 2-and-3.

Michelle Egger, Nikala Majewski and Rayvn Wiebe notched nine kills each for the Bobcats, who slipped to 5-and-2.

Brandon and Trinity Western meet in the Canada West rematch at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Healthy Living Centre.
