Shoot for the Cure night goes this Saturday as the Bobcat basketball teams welcome the University of Alberta.
Â
The annual event looks to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research by partnering with women's university basketball programs across the country.
Â
This weekend's contests at the HLC will see donation boxes located through-out the facility and a portion of the night's 50/50 proceeds will go to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
Â
"It's a great opportunity for us to use our platform and voices to help raise awareness and money for a great cause, plus it's a great way for our student-athletes and staff to recognize those around us that have been affected by this terrible disease," says Bobcats coach
Novell Thomas.
Â
"Almost everyone knows someone or has a family member that has been hurt by cancer, and our those in our program are no different, so we are proud to support such a great initiative," Thomas adds.
Â
The Shoot for the Cure campaign has proven an overwhelming success since it was launched in the fall of 2007, with overÂ
$1.25 million in donations to date.
Â
This year marks the seventh straight year the Bobcats have participated.
Â
U SPORTS schools raise money through regular season games and other special events. A cheque will be presented to CCS – which merged with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) in February 2017 – during the gold medal game of the 2019 U SPORTS Women's Basketball Final 8, hosted by Ryerson University.
The fundraising initiative was the brainchild of Rod Gilpin, the long-time bench boss of the Bishop's women's program, now in his 11
th season as head coach of the Gaiters' men.
