Cougrars sweep Bobcats to remain perfect

BRANDON, Man. – The Mount Royal Cougars made quick work of the host Brandon Bobcats Friday night, running to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-15) win.

The Bobcats pushed the Cougars to start the second set but Mount Royal found a way to adapt and overcome the pressure.

"You have to make the other team adjust to what you're doing and not adjust to what they're doing," said fifth-year outside hitter Chantel Park of her team's performance in the win.

"I think that's why they got some momentum back, you know, they rallied together and that was our mentality going into the third set, let's rally together and make the changes keep our foot on the gas,"

Park finished with eight kills but was more proud of how her team handled being pushed in the middle of the match.

"We've seen it before many times. If you can stay mentally in a game or in a point longer than the other team then you are going to be successful and it just takes some pressure off the next pass, the next play, the next attack."

Mount Royal jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first set at which point Brandon coach Lee Carter called a timeout.

Rayvn Wiebe put a stop to the Bobcats' bleeding while putting up Brandon's first point at 9-1. It came out of system, but it only helped temporarily.

The Cougars used a balanced attack to run away with the first hitting .344 as a team.

The Bobcats showed some energy to start the second, playing smart against the bigger and more physical Cougars, but Mount Royal utilized a 5-1 run to get some separation late in the set and close it.

Despite hitting just .077 as a team in the third, Mount Royal jumped to a 10-4 lead before taking it on account of Brandon's -.107 as a team.

The Cougars were led by Anna Carlson's match-high nine kills while Brandon was led by Rayvn Wiebe's six.

Caitlin Le continued her torrid pace on the defensive end for BU, registering 26 digs while Park led the Cougars with 12.

The win keeps Mount Royal's perfect record intact at 9-0 while Brandon remains winless at 0-7.

The two teams meet again Saturday afternoon at the Brandon University Healthy Living Centre with first serve scheduled for 5 p.m.
