BRANDON, Man. – The Winnipeg Wesmen got into the win column in dramatic fashion Thursday night, battling back from a 2-1 deficit to beat the Brandon Bobcats 3-2 (25-17, 23-25, 24-26, 25-19, 15-9).
The Wesmen brought an end to a record-setting evening that saw a new conference record as
Caitlin Le finished with 39 digs. A Brandon University school record was broken as well as
Rayvn Wiebe had a career-high 28 kills.
Five Wesmen finished in double-digit kills, led by Ashleigh Laube's team-high 16. Emma Parker and Taylor Boughton each finished with 12 kills while Kalena Schulz had 11 and Haille Bujan finished with 10.
Fifth-year Killarney, Man. product Rylie Dickson knew the five-set battle would be a war and relied on pre-season experience to carry her team through.
"I was thinking about one of the pre-season games against U of M and it went to five sets and we were up in the fifth set and ended up losing, so I was like we are not letting that happen again," said Rylie Dickson, who finished with a match-high 54 assists in the win.
"We've been working so hard and we know we can beat this team. We beat Brandon in pre-season in five so we knew we could do it and we just stuck together."
While Dickson was happy with her team's win, Wiebe spent little time reflecting on her night.
"If we win, that's great. If we don't, it's the same result, so tough to swallow a loss but we go on to Saturday," said Wiebe of her record setting performance.
Le was one of 10 players in the match to put up double-figure digs, as the two teams traded blows in the marathon match.
Jamie Bain finished with a double-double for the Bobcats (48 assists and 16 digs).
The two teams meet again Saturday night at the University of Winnipeg in the second half of the home-and-home series.
First serve is set for 6:45 p.m. and the match can be seen live at
