Davis delivers for the WolfPack

BRANDON, Man. – The WolfPack's all-time leading scorer came through in the clutch on Saturday night.

Fifth-year Joe Davis delivered nine of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter to lead Thompson Rivers to a 73-67 road victory over the Brandon Bobcats in Canada West men's basketball action.

"We knew we were going to have to grind this one out because that team wanted it really bad," said Davis. "We pride our offence on being diverse as we have a few players that can score the ball. Every once in a while, it is your turn to make a couple of shots and it is nice to be able to do that for your team."

The Bobcats trailed 6-0 to start the first quarter but their offence caught fire the rest of the way. Brandon had 23 points in a fast-paced opening frame highlighted by a slam dunk from Haashim Wallace and four BU three pointers.

Wallace dazzled the crowd at the Healthy Living Centre with another dunk in BU's opening possession of the second quarter, but Brandon's offence went cold. TRU outscored the Bobcats 19-9 and led 38-32 at halftime.

Brandon rallied with a 12-6 run to tie it 44-44 in the third, but Thompson Rivers countered with back-to-back threes from Richard Mageto and Davis to re-gain the momentum.

Davis dropped another dagger from beyond the arc midway through the fourth to put the WolfPack up by ten.

The 'Cats cut the lead in half with just over a minute to go, but they could not complete the comeback.

Anthony Tsegakele and Jaleel Webb both finished with double-doubles for the Bobcats. Tsegakele scored a team-high 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Webb added 15 points and 10 boards.

"We came out strong, but they didn't have the first-half that they wanted. They came out strong in the second-half and we didn't match their energy," said Tsegakele.

The WolfPack have a conference record of 11-3 and will put a five-game winning streak on the line this coming weekend when they visit the Victoria Vikes.

Meanwhile, the Bobcats are on the road against the UNBC Timberwolves on January 24-25 with their playoff hopes hanging in the balance.
