Pandas sweep 'Cats to start 2020

BRANDON, Man. – The Alberta Pandas picked up Saturday where they left off Friday, running to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-16) win over the host Bobcats.

The Pandas were more efficient on offence, dug up more balls, and out-blocked the Bobcats to improve to 9-5 in conference play on the season and remain perfect in 2020.

The first set was all Pandas as they jumped to a 6-0 lead before running away with it. The Pandas put up 16 kills as a team, hitting .324 in the first, but the drubbing seemed to wake the Bobcats for the second.

Much like the night before, Brandon started the second set with momentum, running to a 7-3 lead at which point Pandas coach Laurie Eisler called a time-out. Alberta sided-out the next serve before clawing their way into the set, eventually closing it out on a 5-1 run.

The third set was much like the first, as the Pandas scored early and often to run the table and take six straight sets over the Bobcats on the weekend.

"One of our biggest goals at the New Years Classic and this weekend was just to get back to that level of how we ended 2019," said Alberta setter Elyse Hart of her team's great start to 2020.

"I think we did a really good job coming into this weekend and just giving it all we got."

Hart paced the Pandas with a match-high 38 assists, while Julia Zonneveld registered a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs. Kory White led all scorers with 17.5 points coming on 15 kills and five assisted blocks.

After making her Bobcat debut Friday night late in the match Friday, import middle Kaoane Loch subbed in the first set of Saturday's match and made an impact. The 6-foot-5 product of Pomerode, Brazil put up a team-high three blocks, all coming in the second set.

"I'm adjusting really well to the team. There's a little bit that I need to work harder at like my timing, but happy with my block but there's still lots to improve," said Loch following Saturday's match.

The Bobcats fall to 2-12 in conference play and will play at home again next weekend as they welcome the Regina Cougars.

The Pandas will enjoy a bye next weekend before taking on cross-town foes the MacEwan Griffins on Jan. 17-18.
