BRANDON, Man. – The Trinity Western Spartans mounted a late comeback to upset the Brandon Bobcats on what was supposed to the swan song for a pair of Bobcats.
Trinity trailed all game until the final minute when the team tied the game on a Julia Marshall lay-up before Jayden Gill hit a pair of free-throws to put the team ahead.
On the final possession of the game, Brandon's
Logan Biccum collected an offensive rebound under the hoop but was unable to convert in the dying seconds as the Spartans hung on for a 69-67 win in what was Biccum's final home game as a Bobcat.
Biccum and
Hailey Maas were honoured following the game as Brandon's two graduating seniors, but it was Trinity's Nicole Fransson who stole the show.
Fransson's double-double of 18 points and 15 rebounds led all players in both categories.
Gill wasn't far behind with 16 points while Marshall also finished in double figures with 10 points.
In reflecting on the come-from-behind win, Fransson can't help but think about the Spartans' future.
"It helps to build our confidence because we haven't got too many wins this season," said Nicole Fransson.
"We are young and it helps to teach us we can win those close battles and help us to build confidence for next year."
Maas went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc in a 10-minute window of the first half to give BU their biggest lead of the half at 29-21.
Trinity chipped away to trim the deficit to 33-30 at the half.
Brandon continued to extend the lead through-out the second half despite cooling off from downtown.
Maas finished with 14 points and wasn't dwelling on the outcome.
"It was great. It's always great when your shots are knocking down, especially in the last home game. Family's here, lots of fans who love watching me and I?just wanted to put on a good show," Maas said
Trinity's record improves to 5-13 on the season while the Bobcats sit at 1-17 heading to the final conference weekend of the season.
The Bobcats will head to Winnipeg to play the Manitoba Bisons while Trinity hosts the Victoria Vikes to conclude the regular season.
