Cougars use buzzer beater and overtime to beat Bobcats

BRANDON, Man. – In a game with high drama, the Regina Cougars held off the surging Bobcats in overtime for a 96-88 win on Saturday.

Saturday's contest had it all: a 75-foot buzzer beater, a late three-pointer to force overtime and two teams that left it all on the line, but it would be the Cougars who would keep their win streak alive and take the weekend sweep.

After trailing most of the game, Brandon's Anthony Tsegakele made a fast break dunk that set the tone in the third quarter before Dominique Dennis took the lead at 57-56 with a tough lay-up.

The Bobcats seemed to be building momentum heading to the fourth when a turnover led to a 75-foot buzzer-beater from Brayden Kuski that gave Regina a 62-57 lead.

The Cougars then started the fourth on an 8-0 run for a 13-point lead before Brandon chipped away over the rest of the quarter. A big three from Sultan Haider Bhatti in the last minute and a last second attempt that wouldn't fall for Regina forced overtime.

Regina came out running to an early lead in the extra frame before putting it away.

The Cougars were led by Carter Millar's team-high 21 points while Kuski wasn't far behind with 20 points. Josiah Thomas had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Tsegakele put up another double-double, this time with 18 points and a season-high 19 rebounds.

Dominique Dennis had a game-high 22 points, which was also a season-high for the sophomore guard while Haider Bhatti finished with 20 points.

The win improves Regina's record to 7-3 while Brandon falls to 1-9.

The Cougars will now have a bye next weekend before welcoming the Manitoba Bisons on January 28.

Brandon will head to Saskatoon next weekend to play the Saskatchewan Huskies.
