WolfPack complete sweep of Bobcats

KAMLOOPS – The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball made it two wins in a row to start their season after they rolled to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-14) victory over the Brandon Bobcats Saturday afternoon.

"Sometimes you work really hard and the result is not there, but that doesn't mean you did something wrong. When the result is there like it was today it just reinforces that we are on the right path," said WolfPack head coach Behlul Yavasgel. "I think we have a strong squad, I started with a completely different 14 tonight, I played the rookies in the third set so I'm very happy."

For the second night in a row Ema Palkovicova led the WolfPack offence. The first year from Bratislava, Slovaki finished with 10 kills on her 21 attempts while also adding a service ace.

"Ema is a game changer," said Yavasgel. "Her presence on the court is key, not just her physical skills, but she's so engaged in every point it rubs off onto other people. She's a very important personality on the court for us."

Brooklyn Olfert and Erin Mutch rounded out the top attackers for TRU with seven and eight kills respectively while Abby Spratt had 24 assists.

Danielle Dardis was the picture of efficiency for the Bobcats with the third-year middle from Calgary recording five kills on just seven attempts. Avery Burgar added four kills while Carly Thomson had 13 assists.

TRU hit a sparkling .333 per cent as a team while limiting the Bobcats to 0.056 per cent.

The first set was all Palkovicova. The 6-1 outside hitter finished on six of her 11 kill attempts to lead the WolfPack to victory.

Olfert and Mutch came to life in the second frame racking up six and five kills respectively. A massive 12-3 WolfPack run sparked by a service ace from Mutch took the game all the way from 13-12 to 25-15.

After falling into a five-point hole at 10-5 early, the Bobcats nearly climbed all the way back thanks to a lengthy serving run from Laura Ramsey making but TRU was able to rebound and pull away for the comfortable 25-14 victory to complete the sweep.

TRU will head out on the road next weekend when they travel to Winnipeg next weekend for a pair of games against the Manitoba Bisons.

Brandon meanwhile will look to get their first win of the young season when they return home to host the UBC Thunderbirds.
