Improved performance helps UBC earn weekend sweep

BRANDON, Man. – The UBC Thunderbirds cleaned up an already impressive performance from Friday to take care of the Brandon Bobcats 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-14, 25-16) Saturday night at the HLC.

After a record-setting night on Friday, the Thunderbirds found a way to get the job done faster and more efficiently, hitting .385 as a team, led by Michael Dowhaniuk's dazzling .483 hitting percentage.

Dowhaniuk and Matt Neaves each finished with 15 kills, Dowhaniuk also adding 12 digs.

Sophomore setter Mason Greves finished with a double-double for the 'Birds, registering 44 assists and 12 digs.

The Bobcats were led by Philipp Lauter and Tom Friesen, who finished with 11 and 10 kills respectively. The Bobcats were hindered by an inefficient attack, hitting just .098 on the night.

The struggles on offence allowed some relative newcomers to make significant contributions however as Liam Kindle, Evan Mah and Liam Pauls all subbed in and each recorded their first Canada West conference points.

The win improves UBC's record to 3-1 while the Bobcats fall to 1-3.

The Bobcats head on the road next weekend to Edmonton to play a weekend series against the Alberta Golden Bears.

Next home action for Brandon comes in about a months time, as the Bobcats will welcome the MacEwan Griffins for a weekend set, starting on Nov. 25.
