The University of Regina's men's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 91-65 win over the Brandon Bobcats on Friday night in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The win improves Regina's record to 10-3 as the Cougars clinch at least a third place finish in the East Division. That guarantees a bye through to the second round of the Canada West postseason bracket, which begins four weekends from now in host cities Calgary and Lethbridge.

Majok Madol was a force for the Cougars in the win, scoring 16 points and adding 10 rebounds to notch his fourth double-double of the conference schedule. Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo hit all three triples he attempted and led the Cougars with 17 points, while Brayden Kuski also hit three three-pointers and scored 15.

The Cougars scored the final 14 points of the first quarter on a wild run in just over two minutes which featured two three-pointers by Brayden Kuski in addition to triples by Matt Barnard and Nigel Warden. The Cougars were a blistering 6-for-9 from three-point range in that opening quarter, helping put them up 32-7 heading into the second.

Regina led by at least 20 points for the remainder of the game, though the lead ballooned to 30 at one point in the fourth.

"I thought we started great and came out with good energy," Cougars head coach Steve Burrows said. "Offensively we did what we talked about with good ball movement to get us some good looks. We got the one we wanted, now we'll work towards tomorrow."

Emeka-Anyakwo's 17 points were a career high for the second-year forward.

"Arinze has the ability to impact the game on both ends when he plays with energy," Burrows said. "It's not so much his scoring, even though he did that tonight, but he can just make such a difference when he brings that level of fire to the game."

Brandon (1-12) was led by a game-high 20 points by Jahmaal Gardner. Anthony Tsegakele added points for Brandon while also leading the team with eight rebounds.

The two teams will close out the weekend series on Saturday night at the CKHS. Just like Friday's game, Saturday's contest will also start an hour earlier than normal with a 7:00 PM scheduled tip-off.
