BRANDON – The secret is officially out, and the rest of the conference has been put on notice. Brandon Bobcats guard Munroop Gill has been named the Canada West Men's Basketball Rookie of the Year, putting the finishing touches on one of the most spectacular debut campaigns in program history.
The first-year guard out of Surrey, B.C., was an absolute offensive force from the moment he stepped onto the court at the Healthy Living Centre. Gill proved immediately that he belonged among the conference's elite, finishing his freshman season averaging a staggering 17.9 points per game.
What made Gill's season truly remarkable wasn't just the volume of his scoring, but his elite efficiency. As a rookie navigating the physical and demanding landscape of Canada West basketball, he shot an incredible 54.5 percent from the field and over 40 percent from beyond the arc.
His name was plastered across the top-ten of the conference leaderboards all year long. Gill finished his campaign ranked fourth in points per game, third in total field goals, seventh in total points, seventh in field goal percentage, and seventh in three-point percentage.
Bobcats fans knew they had something special early on, particularly after a breakout performance in November against the Saskatchewan Huskies where he erupted for a season-high 33 points. It was a statement game that proved no stage was too big for the freshman.
For Bobcats Head Coach Gil Cheung, the accolade is a testament to Gill's character, work ethic, and the support system that helped bring him to the Wheat City.
"Munroop has had an exceptional freshman season. He's put in the work each day and really found his niche in our program," said Cheung. "He would be the first one to thank his teammates for this individual award, but also everyone that's helped him get to BU. Drive Basketball, Pasha, and Karn really helped us recruit Munroop here, and we owe them a ton in trusting us with his development as an exceptional student-athlete."
Gill's well-deserved honour not only cements his status as the top newcomer in Western Canada, but it also signals a remarkably bright future for the Brandon Bobcats. With his first year in the books, the foundation is set for Munroop Gill to be a cornerstone of this program for years to come.
