BRANDON UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCED AS 2016 CIS WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL NATIONALS HOST
By: Matt Packwood
Original post: 10/19/2014

BRANDON – Following a busy summer of securing funding, event planning and creating a bid package, it appears the work is just starting for BU Athletics. Brandon University has been selected as host for the 2016 Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) women's volleyball national championships.

Seven CIS teams will travel to Brandon to take part in the event, hosted by the Bobcats. As host, BU will get an automatic berth in the tournament.

"We at Brandon University have been building towards this for a few years now. We made what we felt was a very strong bid, and we're glad that CIS recognized that by awarding us with the opportunity to host this event and showcase our program, our campus, and our community," says BU Athletic Director Russ Paddock. "The Healthy Living Centre is a world-class facility, our women's volleyball team is among the best in the country, and Brandon and the surrounding area are very welcoming. We are excited for this opportunity, and know that our committee will step up and do a great job of hosting."

This event will be the first CIS national championship held at Brandon University. With BU's new facility, and the strength of the Bobcat program, 2016 will undoubtedly be the ideal time for Brandon University to host the national event.

"This announcement is great for our team, but more than that, it's validation of years of hard work for everyone that is or has been affiliated with the Bobcat athletic program," says Bobcats women's volleyball coach Lee Carter. "The opportunity to host the national championship gives Brandon University a chance to showcase all aspects of our great school and athletic program."

The event will run the week of March 8-13, and will feature an 11 match tournament format, an All-Canadian Award reception, and a10th anniversary celebration of having CIS volleyball at Brandon University.

Teams taking part will represent all four CIS regional associations, meaning the Wheat City and Brandon University will be on the national stage for a full week. National media will cover the event and it will provide a large economic impact for Brandon's business community.

The Bobcat Athletic Department staff secured a $25,000 grant from the City of Brandon's Accommodation Tax Grant program back in August, and has been working with Brandon First to secure the bid, and will continue to work with Brandon First to plan and prepare for the event.
