Box Score CALGARY - It was a hard-fought game that came down to the last possession, but unfortunately the last possession ended in the University of Calgary's favour, giving the Dinos a 66-64 victory.
Fifth-year Tamare Jarrett scored 15 of her 31 points in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning bucket with six seconds to play as the Dinos upended the Bobcats in a rare Thursday night contest in the Jack Simpson Gym.
For the second time this season, third-year guard
Cassie Cooke put up 39 points, highlighted by nine 3-pointers. Cooke's success from beyond the arc ties a Canada West single game record, set by Winnipeg's Caitlin Gooch in February of 2011, which interestingly came in a conference game in Brandon.
The Dinos had trouble defending Cooke all night, and she made shot after shot from all areas of the floor. Of her 29 field goal attempts, 21 came from beyond the arc on a night where she added five assists, six rebounds, and a steal to her totals.
The first quarter was all Brandon, with the Bobcats jumping out to a 14-6 lead. But the Dinos stormed back early in the second and put up 30 points in the period to emerge with a comfortable 10-point halftime lead. Brandon managed to erase that advantage in the third quarter to tie it at 48-48 heading into the fourth, setting the stage for the duel between Cooke and Jarrett down the stretch.
Kaela Cranston was the only other Bobcat in double digits with 11 points on the night, with the rest of the team combining for just 14.
Stephanie Haynes pitched in with a team-high eight rebounds, while
Jaynell Gillett added seven.
The win improves Calgary's record to 7-2, while Brandon falls to 2-7.
The two teams wrap up their weekend series Friday night back in the Jack Simpson Gym, with tip-off at 6 p.m. MT live on
