The Brandon Bobcats made quick work of the Mount Royal Cougars Saturday night, earning a weekend sweep to begin the 2014-15 Canada West regular season, winning 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-23).
Sebastien Steigmeier and
Sam Tuivai each had 12.5 points for the Bobcats in the victory. Tyler Schmidt was the Cougar's leading scorer with 11.5 points.
In the first set the two sides went back and forth until they reached five points a side. Brandon went on an 8-3 run from there and took a decisive hold on the set. Mount Royal hand no answer for
Roy Ching or
Sebastien Steigmeier who kept burying kills. Brandon won the first set handily 25-16.
Mount Royal stayed closer throughout the second. Mount Royal took a brief lead with rookie Tanner Greves at the service line. Greves put together two service aces in a row to give MRU an 11-10 lead. However the lead was short-lived as Brandon won nine of the next thirteen points. The Bobcats eventually won the set 25-21.
The final set was the Cougar's best of the night. At points it looked like the Cougars would be able to extend the match but they just could not build a large enough lead to stave off the surging Bobcats. A questionable call ended the set and the match, much to the chagrin of Cougar's Coach Shawn Sky and his assistants.
The Bobcats move to 2-0 with the victory, while Mount Royal falls to 0-2 on the season.
Brandon will now have a bye weekend before hosting the University of Calgary Dinos in the Bobcats home opener on October 24..
The Cougars will head to the other side of the Rockies for two dates with the UBC Thunderbirds beginning Friday night.
