BRANDON – A back and forth that came down to the wire went in favour of the host Bobcats Friday night, as they narrowly escaped the Trinity Western Spartans 62-61.
Trinity Western's Kristin Ford forced a turn-over on a Brandon inbounds pass with three seconds left in the game, then raced down the court and hit a lay-up that was eventually waved off as the ruling on the floor was the time had expired.
the Bobcats had an eight point lead at half, but started the third quarter with three straight turnovers that led to Spartan baskets, which gave Trinity Western new life in the second half. Both teams exchanged blows through-out the second half, leading to the last second attempt from Ford that didn't count.
Three Spartans finished in double-digit scoring, led by Luca Schmidt's team-high 14 points. Ford finished with 13 points, while Laurissa Wiegl finished two rebounds shy of a double-double with 12 points and eight boards.
The Bobcats were led by Alyssa Montgomery's game-high 17 points. Montgomery also added 11 rebounds, while sophomore forward Amy Williams pulled down a game-high 13 boards.
The win gives Brandon their third straight victory to improve to 3-4, while the Spartans share the same record of 3-4.
The two teams will meet again Saturday night in Brandon for a rematch. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 pm.
