Box Score REGINA, Sask. – The University of Regina's women's basketball team went on a huge run in the first quarter and never looked back in a 102-50 victory over Brandon on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Â
Brandon's
Stephanie Haynes had the game's opening bucket, but the Cougars went on a 24-0 run after that to take complete control of the contest. The U of R led 34-9 after the first quarter and took a 19-point lead into halftime after Brandon's best 10 minutes of the game, but the Cougars pulled away after halftime. They outscored Brandon 32-18 in the third and held the Bobcats to just eight points in the fourth while pushing the advantage to over 50.
Â
Katie Polischuk was hot from three-point range all night long, finishing 6-for-12 from downtown and 9-for-18 overall while scoring a game-high 24 points. Four other Cougars also hit double figures, including Janine Guijt with 19 points, Kehlsie Crone and Alyssia Kajati with 15 apiece, and Charlotte Kot with 10.
Â
The Cougars enjoyed a huge 70-38 advantage in rebounding, led by 11 from Jennilea Coppola and 10 by Kajati as part of her fourth double-double of the season.
Â
Cassie Cooke led Brandon (6-15) with 15 points and seven rebounds while
Keegan Robinson was effective off the bench with 11 points, nine of which came off a trio of second-half three-pointers.
Â
The win clinches at least a second-place finish in the division for the Cougars, who will host one of UBC, Victoria, or Thompson Rivers next weekend in a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series. The Cougars could still place first in the Prairie Division, but would need a Saskatchewan victory over Alberta in Edmonton this weekend to pass the Pandas in the standings.
Â
The Cougars and Bobcats will finish the two-game set on Saturday night beginning at 5 p.m.
