‘Cats salvage split with Wesmen with sweep

BRANDON - The Brandon Bobcats bounced back after Wednesday's loss to Winnipeg, sweeping the Wesmen 3-0(25-18, 25-23, 25-20).

The 'Cats took control of the first set early and didn't let up, closing out the first set with a service ace by Vaovai Aiono.

The second set saw the Wesmen spark a comeback, leading BU by six points at 18-12. The Bobcats battled back to tie things up at 24 apiece before earning three points in a row to close out the set.

Brandon went on a 6-1 run in the third, but fourth-year Ellina Domnidou served five points in a row to close the gap and tie things up at 15. The 'Cats regained composure and regained the lead, closing out the set, and the match, 25-20.

Fifth-year Tori Dakin had a big night for the 'Cats, earning a double-double with 12 kills, 12 digs, five blocks and a service ace. Shanlee McLennan added 10 kills, four digs, and five blocks.

Third-year Mary Thomson had a game-high 39 assists.

Hailey Buhler was one kill shy of a double-double, notching nine kills and 10 digs. Chelsea Jones added six kills and one block.

Head coach Lee Carter was pleased with the energy his team found for tonight.

"In the first set we were emotionally raring to go.  In the second, it took us a little bit to overcome a deficit. They did a great job of changing their game plan a little bit to force us to change our game plan. In the third we just rode our wave of energy and we had to change our offense a lot today to get them out of their system in order to overcome their strong defense," says Carter.

Moving forward, Carter hopes that his team can continue to build on tonight's success

"We have a group that when we're focused, on task, and ready to go, we can be extremely competitive. We cannot get discouraged by the fact that other teams are going to score and we need to calm down in the game and realize that we can make our own opportunities," added Carter.

The win brings the Bobcat record to 12-8, while the Wesmen fall to 8-12.

Up next, the Bobcats will face the University of Alberta Pandas at home, while the Wesmen will play a home-and-home series against the University of Manitoba.
