Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Historic win as Bobcats dismantle 'Horns

Lethbridge – Leading start to finish, the Brandon Bobcats completed the weekend sweep of the Lethbridge Pronghorns with a convincing 82-54 victory. The win is a historic one, as it is the largest margin of victory for the Bobcats women's basketball team since joining the Canada West conference in 1999.

The loss drops the 'Horns to 0-2 on the season, while the win moved the Bobcats back to the .500 mark at 2-2.

Newcomers Katie Keith and Malayah Bruno were the lone Pronghorns to hit double digits in with each scoring 10 points in the loss. The Bobcats had all but one player register a point and Alyssa Montgomery led all scorers with 14 points.

Shayna Mathison was a perfect 3-3 from the floor, good for nine points, while Keisha Cox 11 points and seven assists to go with four rebounds.

Keegan Robinson had a great night coming off the bench, putting up 10 points on 3-6 shooting from the 3-point line. Amy Williams was close to registering a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds, while Lauren Anderson was also close to double-double, finishing with eight points and 10 rebounds.

From the opening tip it was a struggle for the Pronghorns offensively; the 'Horns only scored two points in the opening six minutes and watched the Bobcats race out to a 9-2 lead.

Malayah Bruno and Kendra Lee hit back-to-back three points and it looked like the two long range shots would kick start the 'Horns offense but it did not. At the end of the opening quarter, the Bobcats led 18-10.

The struggle at the offensive end of the floor continued for the second quarter, while the Bobcats continued to score with ease. By the middle of the quarter the Bobcats had built a 17-point lead and headed into the break with a 43-18 advantage.

In the half the 'Horns shot a dismal 18.9% from field and hit only 2 of 17 three point attempts, while the Bobcats hit on 47.1% in the half and out rebounded the Pronghorns 31 to 19.

While the 'Horns were better in the third, winning the quarter 18-16 and cutting the Brandon lead to 16 points, that is as close as they would get on the night. Brandon poured in another 23 points in the fourth, pushing the lead to as many as 34 points before settling for the 28-point win.

On the night, the Bobcats hit 44.3% from the field and dominated the glass, picking up 58 rebounds to the 'Horns 35. After shooting under 19% in the opening half, the 'Horns finished the night with a 24.3% shooting percentage.

The 'Horns will hit the road next weekend, heading to Regina to face the CIS sixth ranked Regina Cougars. The Bobcats will have a bye next week, before returning to action in two weeks to host the Manitoba Bisons.
