Late surge from Dinos too much for Bobcats

BRANDON – In a game that game down to the wire, the Calgary Dinos picked up a hard-fought win over the host Bobcats Saturday night by a score of 65-60. In a game highlighted by shifts in momentum, the Dinos took control in the final two minutes of the game, earning the weekend sweep in the process.

The two teams traded blows and leads through-out the first half, highlighted by big runs from each team. The Bobcats went on a 8-0 run in the first to extend their lead to 14-10. A few minutes later the Dinos answered back by going on a 6-0 run to lead 20-19. Brandon ended the first half on a 10-3 run to take a 31-25 lead into the half-time break.

The second half was much the same, but the Bobcats seemed to be in control, taking a 10 point lead early in the fourth. But it was all for not, as the Dinos took their first lead at 58-57 behind a pair of free-throws from Kristie Shiels. The momentum in those free throws was enough for Calgary, as they hung on down the stretch to earn the victory.

Kristie Shiels led the charge for Calgary, putting up 23 points to go with four assists and four steals in 32 minutes of playing time. Kelsey Lund added 13 points, while Claire Colborne finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

The Bobcats had a solid effort from Keisha Cox, who put up a game-high 30 points and nine rebounds in 38 minutes of court time. Brandon's starting forwards struggled offensively, as Alyssa Montgomery and Amy Williams finished with nine and six points respectively.

Bobcats coach Novell Thomas admits his team's effort late in the game as clearly the problem.

"I just wish we would've executed better in the fourth quarter. We won each quarter except for the fourth. We had a horrible fourth quarter," says Thomas.

"Whether it's fatigue, or having enough experience as a group, regardless, we just need to be better and remember plays and execute them."

The win improves Calgary's record to 9-4 while the Bobcats fall to 5-5 on the season.

The Bobcats will welcome another Alberta-based team in the University of Alberta Pandas next weekend for a weekend series, while Calgary will travel to Langley to play the Trinity Western Spartans.
