Bobcats fall in four-setter to Wesmen

BRANDON - The Brandon University men's volleyball team fell in four sets on Saturday night at the Healthy Living Centre against the Winnipeg Wesmen in Canada West action.

The set scores were 25-16, 18-25, 25-20 and 27-25.

The Bobcats, with their backs against the wall, came close to forcing a fifth and final set.

Brandon fell behind 22-19 in the fourth, but started to rally back after that by scoring six straight points to lead 24-22.

The Wesmen however staved off the set points and eventually emerged in extras to compete the home-and-home series sweep.

Roy Ching collected 17 kills, while teammate Bruce Akubukaka was next with 12 kills as Brandon's conference record slipped to 5-and-13.

Daven Pascal put away seven kills and added eight blocks while David Stasica had 43 assists and nine digs.

"We really have to fuel each other and come excited each practice and know our practices lead up to games," said Stasica. "We are working hard in the weight room, working hard in the gym, but we got to get a little more excited and bring a little more intensity when it comes to game time, right off the first serve. Then we are not fighting our way back into it when the other teams had a chance to establish their presence. We would like to see a quicker start come next weekend."

David Bommersbach scored a match-high 21 kills as the Wesmen extended their winning streak to six straight, while improving to 13-and-5.

Winnipeg was also led by Brendan Thielmann, who chipped in with 12 kills, while fellow Wesmen Garrett Jones had nine blocks and Logan Brennan had 15 digs, both were match highs.

The Bobcats are back on home court this coming weekend when they welcome the Mount Royal Cougars with contests set for Friday and Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Wesmen have another home-and-home series against longtime rival the Manitoba Bisons with matches on Thursday and Saturday.
