BRANDON – The Brandon Bobcats accomplished a first in their 17 years as members of the Canada West conference, as the 'Cats picked up their first weekend sweep in a home-opener weekend since joining the conference. Brandon had to battle for the second straight night, as 'Cats contained the UBC Okanagan Heat en route to a 66-60 victory.

The Bobcats didn't do themselves any favours in the first half, shooting just 23 per cent from the floor, but found their stroke early in the third quarter.

The Heat started the second half on a 5-0 run before Keisha Cox hit a three to stop the bleeding, which also started things for the Bobcats.

A minute later Cox found Mikaela Stanton on a fast-break for an open three, then Amy Williams hit an open jumper under the basket to tie the game at 34-34.

The Bobcats managed a 15-4 run before Claire Elliot hit a three late in the third to keep Brandon's lead to eight at 49-41.

The final frame was much like the rest of the weekend, as the Heat battled back to  tie it with a minute left thanks to a huge three by Shanelle Tamminen, but Brandon wouldn't be denied. After being sent to the free-throw line, the Bobcats converted five of their final six free-throw attempts to ice it.

Claire Elliot led all scorers for the Heat with 19 points to go along with four steals, while Emily Kanester put up 13 points and five steals.

Three Bobcats finished in double-digit scoring, led by Stanton's 15 points. Amy Williams added 14 points, and Keisha Cox had 12 points. Keegan Robinson was a difference-maker on defence, producing multiple pressure-situations on the defensive end and contributing nine points and eight rebounds.

The win moves Brandon to 2-2 on the season, while the Heat remain winless at 0-4.

Up next for the Bobcats is a road trip to Saskatoon next weekend to play the Saskatchewan Huskies, while the Heat will welcome the Mount Royal Cougars for a weekend series.
