Bobcats fall in four to Dinos

BRANDON – The Brandon Bobcats dropped a four sets decision against the sixth-ranked Calgary Dinos on Friday night in Canada West women's volleyball action at the Healthy Living Centre.

The BU women's team got off to a great start as they led 16-11 at the technical timeout. They pulled away for good in the first set as the Bobcats took a 21-16 advantage. Nikala Majewski was stellar off the top and finished the first set with her seventh kill of the opening set.

In the second set, the Dinos grabbed an early 4-2 lead and went up 11-8 and 13-9 before going into the technical timeout up 16-10. From there, Calgary made the match all square.

Calgary continued to build momentum in the third as they led the Bobcats 9-3. BU tried to turn to the tables, but to no avail as they trailed 15-8. Calgary made quick work of Brandon in the third set 25-10.

Intensity picked up in the fourth with the Bobcats having their backs against the wall. Courtney Roberts had a key block to give Brandon a 12-9 spread and at the technical timeout the Bobcats led 16-12.

Brandon's confidence continued to build as they inched closer to forcing a fifth set as they were up 19-15, but the Dinos had other plans.

Calgary collected three straight points and trailed Brandon 19-17.

The two sides battled down the stretch with Breanne Sytnyk scoring a kill followed by an ace from Jodie Baker and BU led 22-20.

The Dinos again strung together a series of points to lead 23-22 and appeared poised to finish off the match.

The Bobcats battled back and saved a pair of match points, but they could not get any closer.

Brandon is still searching for their first win of the conference season at 0-and-5, while Calgary upped their record to 4-and-1 with the win.

The Bobcats will look to bounce back when they welcome the Dinos in the rematch on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Healthy Living Centre.
