BRANDON – The Brandon Bobcats closed their season in style by picking up a 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-20) win and a weekend sweep over the MacEwan Griffins to close the 2015-16 Canada West regular season with another first for the program.
The win keeps the Bobcats' perfect record in 2016 intact and marks a 12-match winning streak to close the season. The win also marks the first time in the history of Brandon University women's volleyball to have a perfect semester.
The Bobcats proved it's not how you start, but how you finish, both tonight and in their regular season record. The 'Cats started tonight by struggling to serve, putting up five serve errors in the first set alone. The Griffins were determined in the first set, jumping to an early 16-8 lead. The Bobcats were able to regroup and take the set in extra points.
The comeback set the tone for the rest of the match, as MacEwan hung in there throughout, but the Bobcats proved to be too much, taking it in straight sets.
The Bobcats were led by
Shanlee McLennan's team-high eight kills. McLennan also added 14 digs, while fellow senior
Donata Huebert put up 17 digs, the most of which came in the spectacular fashion that Brandon volleyball fans have to come expect of the three-time national libero of the year.
Following the match, all three graduating players from the Bobcats were recognized in the senior night festivities, as the Brandon faithful bid farewell to seniors McLenna, Huebert and
Grier Moffet.
Reflecting on his team's performance, Bobcats head coach
Lee Carter spoke of each grad's contributions to the program.
"Each one is a little bit different. There's a lot of emotion involved. They've all poured their heart and soul into our program and they're proud Bobcats and it's always emotional to see the kind of ending of an era," says Carter.
The Griffins were paced by Cassidy Kinsella's match-high nine kills, while libero Karly Edgar had 17 digs.
The Bobcats will now prepare for their first round of the playoffs, when they will travel to Vancouver to take on the UBC Thunderbirds next weekend for a Canada West quarterfinal series.
The loss concludes MacEwan's season, as the Griffins will not head to the post-season.
