Bobcats earn weekend split against Cougars

CALGARY - For the second straight night the Mount Royal Cougars (5-5) and Brandon Bobcats (4-8) went down to the wire in Calgary. This time it was the Bobcats getting the upper hand, taking the Saturday evening match 86-80 to split the weekend series.

Tyvon Cooper and Earl Thompson Jr. were the Bobcats best players on the night, registering 18 and 13 points respectively while Thompson Jr. added 16 rebounds for a double-double.

Brett Layton played well for the Cougars in the losing effort, registering 18 points to go along with 17 rebounds.

Glen Yang picked up where he left off from the day before, knocking down his first two three point tries early in the game to lock the score at 12.

Pookie Saunders had an answer for the Bobcats, making all three of his first quarter field goals before another Yang three pointer would knot the game at 19 to finish the first quarter.

Brandon began pulling away in the second, as Chris Stanhope alongside Saunders began dominating the Cougars defence.

On the other side of the ball the Bobcats preventing the Cougars from getting the ball inside to Brett Layton, resulting in more than a few bad shot selections from the Cougars guards.

Glen Yang would attempt a last second shot from the baseline that went off the side of the backboard, as the Bobcats would take a 41-35 lead into the locker-room.

The Bobcats came into the third quarter strong, as Earl Thompson Jr. made a nice dish to Tyvon Cooper who would score an easy basket on the first possession.

Thompson Jr. would then make a shot of his own a few possessions later to put Brandon up 47-35.

Yang had gone cold since his hot start, missing seven straight field goals after starting 4-7. Thankfully for the Cougars Josh Ross found his form, making a few key baskets midway through the quarter to bring the Cougars back within seven points.

The Cougars would draw closer when the Bobcats head coach threw a fit that would make John Tortorella proud on the sidelines after a Bobcats' foul, leading to a technical. Derek Wolf would make all three of his free throws to draw his team within five.

Late in the quarter Thompson Jr. would foul Josh Ross from behind the arc. Ross would nail all three of his free throws to put his team within three going into the fourth quarter with the score 60-57.

The fourth would quickly turn into a shooting gallery for both teams. After Tyler Anderson made a three pointer over Brett Layton, Derek Wolf made two of his own on two straight possessions to pull within one with five minutes remaining in the game.

The game would then shift from offensive to the complete opposite as both teams began playing shutdown defense, going the next two minutes with only one made basket, by Brandon, to make the score 77-74 with three minutes remaining.

Glen Yang would find his form on the next possession, making a deep two pointer while taking a hit on the arm, putting the Cougars within two points.

After the Cougars drew even Tyvon Cooper would make a three pointer from the corner to put his team back up three with just over a minute left in the game.

The Cougars were unable to make their late shots as Derek Wolf, Glen Yang and Josh Ross would all miss important shots that would've kept the Cougars in the game.

The Bobcats would run out the clock, winning the contest 86-80 for their fourth win on the season.

Brandon will host the MacEwan Griffins next weekend while Mount Royal hits the road to play the UNBC Timberwolves.
