Pandas remain perfect with weekend sweep

BRANDON - The Alberta Pandas picked up a weekend sweep to remain perfect on the conference season with a straight sets victory over the host Bobcats Saturday night.

The Pandas led in all three sets for the second straight night, running away with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-9) victory.

Karly Janssen led the Pandas with 10 kills on 19 swings (.474 attack efficiency) and added six digs.

Kacey Otto had nine kills and eight digs, while Vanessa Jarman added six blocks.

Mariah Walsh finished the match with a double-double, recording 21 assists and 11 digs in the Pandas' win.

Alberta raced to an early 5-1 first set lead behind a potent Kacey Otto serve, leading the entire set before Otto put the set away on a left-side attack.

The Bobcats managed some momentum in the second set, keeping pace with the Pandas to the technical time-out, but Alberta went on a 4-0 run out of the break before securing the set 25-19.

Fifth-year Bobcat Jodie Baker went down with an injury in the third set, and the Pandas maintained momentum, leading the third 20-3 at one point, before taking the set 25-9.

Brandon was led by Nikala Majewski's match-high 11 kills, while Mary Thomson finished with a double-double.

The win improves the Pandas' record 12-0 while the Bobcats drop to 2-10.

Up next for Brandon is a rare matinee match, as the Bobcats will welcome the Regina Cougars next Thursday at noon.

The Pandas will enjoy a bye weekend next weekend before heading to Saskatchewan for a weekend series against the Huskies on January 20-21.
