BRANDON, Man. – The Thompson Rivers WolfPack outlasted the Brandon Bobcats Saturday night in a five-set marathon. The 'Pack looked to be in control at times but Brandon wouldn't back down, eventually falling 3-2 (25-19, 22-25, 26-24, 22-25, 15-11).
The five-set war saw an improvement on both sides of the net that was sparked by the crowd.
"That was an awesome team game by everybody. It's a fun gym to play in here in Brandon. They always seem to have big crowds and lots of enthusiasm, so for us to get two in a row to start the season is pretty big," Avery Pottle said after the match.
Pottle was one of two from the WolfPack to finish in double figure kills, finishing with 19 while Kendra Finch had 21.
The energy was palpable as the match wore on thanks to plenty of highlight reel plays.
After trailing the WolfPack 22-17 late in the second set the Bobcats went on an 8-0 run to close the frame, capped by a pair of spectacular digs by
Caitlin Le.
That sparked the Bobcats as
Rayvn Wiebe put up seven kills in the next two sets before finishing the night with a career-high 23 kills.
Wiebe didn't take too much stock in her career night but took pride in how her team answered the bell following Friday's loss.
"It's tough either way. We'll learn from our mistakes. Obviously we played way better in the third today than we did last night and so that was good, so yeah I'm just happy with how we're performing even though we didn't win tonight," said Wiebe.
The win keeps the 'Pack's perfect record intact to open the season at 2-0. The Bobcats played above their now 0-2 record and will look to turn things around, but can afford to take some time to do so.
Brandon will enjoy a weekend off before travelling to Saskatoon to play the Saskatchewan Huskies in two weeks time.
Thompson Rivers returns home to host the Calgary Dinos in the WolfPack's home-opener on Oct. 25.
