Wesmen gut out fourth quarter to beat Bobcats

WINNIPEG — Finally getting a win to snap an unsightly losing streak, the Winnipeg Wesmen weren't about to waste time justifying to anyone how it looked.

The Wesmen men's basketball team got 13 points and 10 rebounds from Donte Makazu and held on to grind out a 68-62 win over the Brandon Bobcats in a Canada West conference match-up Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre.

The game will win no style points for either side, with Winnipeg shooting 37.5 per cent from the field to Brandon's 35.6 and both teams struggling from the perimeter. The Wesmen finished 5-for-25 there, while Brandon was 2-for-17 including 0-for-8 in the first half.

But the important thing for the Wesmen (3-6) is it broke a six-game losing skid and gave them their first win since the first weekend of the season.

"I think both teams missed shots that they're used to making," Wesmen head coach Mike Raimbault said. "It's the time of year where everybody's a bit banged up, a bit fatigued ... I think it was a pretty physical game and there was lots of bodies flying around -- that was part of it as well. But I think both teams will look back and think that there were lots of opportunities that they didn't capitalize on."

The style of play truly didn't suit either side, neither of which is trying to get into a slow-it-down and brawl-it-out game.

And despite a game-high 12 rebounds (and 22 points) from Anthony Tsegakele, the Bobcats still lost the rebounding battle 49-39, a stat BU head coach Gil Cheung pointed to in the post-game.

"I think they just killed us on the glass," Cheung said. "As much as we think we're coaching our butts off it comes down to turnovers, making some shots and then protecting your own glass. They killed us on the glass and ... so that score's a bit flattering I think."

Narcisse Ambanza added 15 points and five rebounds to the Wesmen cause, while Will Sesay had 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting and nine rebounds off the bench.

Haashim Wallace had 17 points on 4-for-16 shooting for Brandon (1-8), which also got 11 points from Jaleel Webb

The two teams will meet again Monday in Brandon.
