Brandon, Man – The Bobcats reached the century mark and recorded their first win of the Canada West season in the process.
Â
The BU men's basketball team crept closer to .500 after bouncing the visiting Lethbridge Pronghorns 103-89 to improve to 1-2.
Â
The Bobcats had six players in double figures with first-year
Dominique Dennis and fifth-year captain
Jaleel Webb leading the way with 19 points each.
Â
Haashim Wallace and
Anthony Tsegakele scored 18 points apiece, while Tsegakele grabbed 17 rebounds for his first career double-double.
Â
"We wanted the win as bad as ever," said
Elisha Ampofo, who scored 10 points for Brandon. "We knew it was really important to come out and get the win after dropping both games on opening weekend. We had to come out and execute and dig down deep."
Â
The Bobcats and Pronghorns exchanged 8-0 runs in the opening quarter. BU caught fire from beyond the arc hitting six three pointers in the first.
Â
The gap closed on Brandon's lead as Lethbridge found rhythm in the second. Williams, who finished with 11 points, responded with a critical buzzer beater three pointer to give the 'Cats a 50-41 advantage at the break.
Â
Brandon carried the momentum over and started the third with an 8-3 run. The Bobcats outscored the Pronghorns 16-5, before a 7-0 run by Lethbridge trimmed the deficit.
Â
The Pronghorns pushed late in the final frame and cut the lead down to eight, but that is as close as they would get.
Â
"Being able to finish it out down the stretch was critical for us. It gives us experience and now we are ready for the next one," said Tsegakele.
Â
Chad Oviatt had 21 points and 10 rebounds for Lethbridge, while teammate Keanu Funa also had 21 points as the Pronghorns slipped to 0-3.
Â
"We finished well in the fourth quarter, but they just wanted it more throughout the game," said Funa. We need to start with that intensity at the beginning."
Â
The Bobcats and Pronghorns close out the weekend series on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Healthy Living Centre.
