Box Score BRANDON, Man. – The Winnipeg Wesmen earned a 74-57 win over the Brandon Bobcats Monday to pick up the sweep of the home-and-home series.
After winning the rare Thursday contest at home, Monday's win is the fourth in a row for the Wesmen as the team enters the holiday break with a comfortable 6-4 record.
"These games are really physical and emotional because we're all home teams to Manitoba, so we definitely see a high level of competition for sure," says third-year Winnipeg product Robyn Boulanger.
"These two wins were really crucial for where we stand in playoffs, and that is our goal right now – trying to make the playoffs," Boulanger added. "
We've been practicing on being disciplined in running our plays and and transitioning the court very well and that's what we did and got us the win."
While Winnipeg is looking firmly ahead with the goal of the post-season in mind, the Bobcats are reflecting on a tough first half of the season.
"I think we just have to be more disciplined, and that means knocking down shots that we need to knock down, not turning over the ball when we can't turn it over, knowing our player personnel, knowing who we're guarding and how to defend them, and some of those things we just lacked at times," says Brandon's fifth-year guard
Hailey Maas.
The Bobcats remain winless in conference action on the season and start to collectively switch the focus to the second half of the season.
Monday's story for Brandon was a recurring theme all semester: third quarter struggles have plagued the Bobcats so far this season.
Fourth-year combo guard/forward
Adrianna Proulx recognized that's something her team may need to adjust come January.
"I think maybe sometimes after half, maybe it's just that break we hit, we're not ready to come out energized and maybe that's something we need to adjust, whether it's something we need to do when we come out of the team room at half time so that we're ready to come in to the third quarter and we're ready to fight," said Proulx.
Both teams will now enjoy an extended break, as both the Bobcats and Wesmen resume Canada West conference action on Jan. 10 while the rest of the conference resumes the weekend of Jan. 3-4.
Brandon will travel to Regina to take on the Cougars while Winnipeg hosts the MacEwan Griffins for a pair of games at the Duckworth Centre.
