Costly runs lifts Regina to win over Bobcats

The University of Regina's women's basketball team led from wire to wire on Saturday as it defeated Brandon by an 84-52 margin to complete a weekend sweep over the Bobcats at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars scored on both of their opening possessions and never looked back. They led 29-11 after the first quarter, scoring 11 straight points to start out what would become a 23-4 run that extended into the second.

Regina led 53-25 at the half and while Brandon played the Cougars relatively evenly after the break, it wasn't enough to cut into the eventual 32-point margin of victory.

Six of the U of R's eight dressed players hit double figures in scoring, led by a 16-point effort by Faith Reid.

Zoe Hartmann scored 15 points and added 10 rebounds as she was one of three Cougar players to register double-doubles. Alexi Rowden (15 points, 13 rebounds) and Michaela Kleisinger (10 points, 10 rebounds) had the others, while Madeleine Tell (13 points) and Macaela Crone (11) also chipped in offensively.

The Cougars improve to 6-8 with the victory. The weekend sweep not only moves them closer to clinching a postseason berth for the 25th consecutive season, but also improves their chances at a home play-in game. The top eight Canada West seeds all host a postseason contest, and the Cougars entered the night ranked No. 9 in conference RPI.

Brandon (0-12) was led by Laney Harder's 12 points. The Bobcats will be at home next weekend against Thompson Rivers.

Regina will have next weekend off before finishing off the conference schedule with two games against each of Manitoba, UNBC, and Fraser Valley.
